Assunto: Gender differences among active reviewers: an investigation based on publons
Dear Colleagues,
i just saw your paper and i agree that gender differences are important in peer review although not so much in my country, Portugal, which has the highest percentage of female reviewers. Let´s also not forget that Portugal has an outlier performance in what concerns peer review activities per million population https://pacheco-torgal.blogspot.com/2020/05/covid-19-has-changed-peer-review.html
Its a pity, however, that you decide not to comment on the fact that Publons shows that many reviewers having thousands of publications have zero reviews and that is why recently someone suggested that journals should automatically reject the papers of those academics https://pacheco-torgal.blogspot.com/2021/11/a-radical-solution-to-solve-crisis-in.html
You wrote that "the correlations between reviewing and research activities are weak neither in general nor within research fields. The few weak associations that we found suggest that reviewing can be understood as a distinct scholarly activity that is different from performing research, which is in line with Ortega’s findings (Ortega, 2017)" but you could have written that the fact that academia is obsessed with publications and gives almost no value to review activities is harming science and that is why in 2014 a Stanford professor John Ioannidis suggested that the academic reward system needs to be changed. See table 2 in the paper Ioannidis JPA (2014) How to Make More Published Research True. PLoS Med 11(10): e1001747.
Furthermore, on the different female participation in science activities, you could have cited: Chan, H.F., Torgler, B. Gender differences in performance of top-cited scientists by field and country. Scientometrics 125, 2421–2447 (2020).
