This breakthrough gives concrete expression to the “Liberate” imperative set out in the manifesto, Five Normative Imperatives for a Science-Based Civilization. For most of human history, disease, inherited disorders and biological decline were endured as verdicts written by nature. They need not remain so. They are mechanisms that human intelligence can investigate, understand and ultimately overcome. By making the molecular universe radically more searchable, AI opens paths towards medicines that previous generations could not even imagine. What our ancestors were forced to accept as fate, our descendants may remember as suffering that humanity finally acquired the knowledge and courage to defeat.
Yet, as I warned in a previous post, technological power does not inevitably become human progress. A 1,000-fold reduction in computational costs could tear down the gates surrounding drug discovery, allowing universities, start-ups and researchers across the world to search for medicines once reserved for pharmaceutical empires. But if this power is captured by a handful of corporations, it could instead create an unprecedented monopoly over the molecules that determine who is cured, who continues to suffer and who can afford to live. Humanity must act to prevent this medical revolution from becoming yet another machine for reinforcing inequality creating a new generation of billionaires while leaving billions of people unable to afford the cures their suffering helped make so profitable.
