From the USA to Hong Kong: Decoding the Unexpected and Mysterious Interest Shift

  

Since 2019, the USA has consistently been the leading country in terms of absolute visits to this blog as well as two others that I own. This predominance is largely attributable to its substantial population size. However, when adjusting for the number of visitors per million inhabitants, Finland and the Netherlands have traditionally occupied the top spots.

However, less than six months ago, an unexpected development occurred. Hong Kong surpassed the USA in terms of absolute visits, becoming the new leader not only in total numbers but also in visitors per million inhabitants. Its visitor ratio is now nearly 300% higher than that of Finland, which ranks second, and almost 700% higher than that of the Netherlands, which is in third place. 

One hypothesis for this surge in interest was a recent post about an upcoming book I edited with a professor from the University of Hong Kong, who has a high Scopus h-index. Another possibility was that recent posts might have been of particular interest to visitors from Hong Kong. I analyzed the 10 most viewed posts from recent months (below), but this analysis did not reveal any specific trends that would explain the surge. Thus, the question remains: what is driving Hong Kong's mysterious interest in the latest posts on this blog?

7th place - Portugal's Scientific Publications Expected to Exceed Russia's by 1600% in 2025  

8th place - Gen AI's Dark Side: Researchers Expose Rising Tide of Deceptive Content and Fraud 

9th place - Compulsory psychological assessments for candidates applying for positions as university professors and researchers

O país em que professores universitários tem de pagar para que os tribunais ensinem a lei a quem a deveria saber

No inicio do presente mês de Julho divulguei uma sentença de um tribunal, que em boa hora absolveu um professor universitário da prática de um alegado crime. Essa sentença merece hoje um artigo na revista Sábado, com o esclarecedor título "Tribunal decide que professor da FDUL tem direito à liberdade de expressão". https://www.sabado.pt/portugal/detalhe/tribunal-decide-que-professor-da-fdul-tem-direito-a-liberdade-de-expressao

O alegado crime, foi o facto do referido (e corajoso) professor ter dado uma entrevista à revista Sábado em 2020 e antes disso em 2019 ter enviado emails contendo "reparos sobre como eram nomeados professores assistentes na Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Lisboa-sobretudo os filhos dos docentes da casa".

No artigo de hoje da referida revista pode ler-se que "A decisão pode ser importante como precedente no meio académico português, onde a abertura para criticas a problemas institucionais é tipicamente". Não subscrevo porém esta conclusão que reputo de simplista, porque o meio académico Português não é homogéneo.

Há de facto certas universidades com a tal “pouca abertura“, como a supracitada e outras onde até se fala da palavra medo, como aquela apontada por este catedrático, mas há outras universidades onde esse medo inexiste e outras ainda onde há catedráticos que até chegam ao ponto de defender a necessidade de algum caos. https://pacheco-torgal.blogspot.com/2021/11/academia-portuguesa-necessita-de.html

Em boa verdade as elevadas percentagens de descendentes de catedráticos contratados na mesma Faculdade que os seus progenitores, é um fenómeno muito localizado nalgumas poucas áreas, pois na minha área científica e noutras não se verifica de todo.

O misterioso interesse de Hong Kong com um blogue de um investigador Português

 

Durante vários anos, desde 2019, os EUA, muito por conta da sua dimensão sempre foram o país, que em termos absolutos mais visitou este blogue (e outros dois dos quais também sou proprietário). Porém e em termos relativos, de visitantes por milhão de habitantes, esse lugar cimeiro era ocupado pela Finlândia e pela Holanda. Porém há menos de seis meses aconteceu algo inesperado neste blogue, o campeão em termos absolutos, EUA, foi destronado por Hong Kong, o que por sua vez coloca esta região, também como campeão do rácio de visitantes por milhão de habitantes, a longa distância do segundo lugar ocupado pela Finlândia, quase 300%, e a quase 700% do terceiro lugar, ocupado pela Holanda. 

Uma hipótese explicativa possível, que porém se pode afastar desde já, passa pelo post onde fiz referência a um livro que será publicado brevemente, que editei com um professor da universidade de Hong Kong, que possui um elevado h-index Scopus, porquanto esse post é muito recente ao contrário do tal fenómeno que se iniciou há alguns meses atrás. 

Uma outra hipótese possível, seria a de que nos últimos meses tivesse publicado posts que pudessem ter particular interesse para os visitantes da região de Hong Kong, porém uma análise dos 10 posts (em inglês) produzidos nos últimos meses e que tiveram mais visualizações, que abaixo se reproduz, não permite extrair qualquer conclusão relevante nesse sentido, pelo que fica a dúvida, qual é afinal o misterioso interesse de Hong Kong com os últimos posts deste blogue ?
